How To Create A Contemporary Urban Escape

Do You Have a Garden in a Town or City?
Do you wish you could create the feeling of an open, airy space in your garden?
Are you surrounded by walls and fences overlooked by neighbouring houses?

I hear these scenarios all the time but by creating private seating areas and choosing a modern selection of plants you can create a Contemporary Urban Escape for you to unwind in.

What sort of Garden Design are you looking for?

Look at dividing your garden into three distinct areas
Look at a Contemporary Layout with contemporary Ornaments and Furniture
Detailed generous paved area with a crisp edge
Maybe a private and enclosed Hot tub
Soften your boundary walls with planting
Consider Low maintenance

What materials should I consider?

Use materials such as:
Porcelain or Natural Stone smooth paving slabs
Stainless steel
Use sculptures polished into abstract organic form
Timber for Decking or a nice Pergola
Lighting for a night garden

It does not have to be grand.

What Plants Do I Consider?

Low maintenance plants, evergreen species for year-round effect, you want to emphasise on foliage and shape. Divide the garden up with living bamboo in contemporary pots.

 Iris graminea (grass leaved iris)

A rhizomatous iris 30-40cm tall, plum scented, reddish purple flowers with white falls strongly veined with violet. They open in June and July

 Juniperus x pfitzeriana ‘Gold Coast’

A low growing spreading cultivar, flat topped with stunning golden foliage all year round.

Stipa gigantea

Perfect for the back of a border, a semi evergreen grass that may lose all its foliage in the winter depending how cold it gets but fresh new growth appears in the spring. Oat like flower heads erupt in mid-summer.

Fargesia murieliae ‘Simba’

An extremely hardy plant that is short and compact with low arching branches. A hardy clumping bamboo that will only grow 2m high and a spread of 1m after 10-20 years. Perfect for Hedging or a garden screen.

Just a few of the plants to consider, as I have said the emphasis is on foliage in this sort of garden to create an open airy space.
