Gardening in October / November

What can we do to the garden in the months of October and November?

In my own Garden I am constantly collecting leaves and for the last 2 years have been still giving my grass a trim although towards the middle of November when the cold nights come in the final cut has happened. Last October I was still cutting my customers’ grass, it was the last cut of the season so was not the usual cut I normally give, more of a quick trim. Sometimes you have to make your own judgement as the seasons tend to be up and down so go with what you feel.

12 things you could be doing Mid-Autumn:

  • Grab your leaves and make Leaf mould – How? Get a black bag put some holes in the bottom for water to drain collect the leaves put them in the bag and leave them rot down
  • If you have any permanent containers lift them off the deck with some small blocks to protect them from the frost
  • Put some bubble wrap or fleece around containers that contain tender plants
  • It’s a good time to plant any new shrubs or hedges
  • Give your garden some TLC, get out and enjoy the outdoors
  • Tidy up and dead head roses, give them a treatment for mildrew and blackspot
  • Remove summer flowering annuals such as Marigolds, Cosmos, Petunias, Sunflowers
  • Cut back dahlias now ready for lifting
  • Apply a fertiliser to Hibiscus
  • Feed your lawn, fork out any compacted areas
  • If you haven’t already catch the rain water its so much better for your plants
  • Feed your azaleas and camellias with fertilizer suitable for acid loving plants

It’s a good idea to get on top of your weeds now as this will make it easier in the spring and summer months.

If your like me and dabble with some veggies, then it’s a good time to put some potatoes in and spinach. I’ve put mine in containers and just keep topping them up as they grow. I’ve even put garlic in which should be ready in November as only did them a few weeks ago.

Just get outside for an hour or so it will do you good I promise.

It helps me switch off from the world and destress, good for the mind.
